One would be hard pressed to find a lower point than that reached by the Chicago Tribune in its decision to print disgraceful slander under the guise of an editorial cartoon.
The March 14 cartoon depicted leering firefighters with snarling dogs apparently more interested in hosing down minorities than in extinguishing a fire. To describe this as contemptible would be a serious understatement.
The first incident of racial and ethnic slurs over Fire Department radio frequencies was immediately condemned by Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2. The subsequent incidents, sources of which are as yet unidentified, were denounced by the union as well. While there has been speculation as to the origin of these transmissions, (some suggest that those who see a personal advantage by “stirring the pot” may be responsible,) they are unacceptable nonetheless. Should it come to pass that the source of these transmissions are members who harbor racist tendencies, they represent a small fraction of the membership. The vast majority of the firefighters and paramedics are good, hard-working professionals who put their lives and personal safety on the line every day on behalf of all of the citizens of Chicago.
The Tribune owes a sincere apology to the dedicated men and women of the Chicago Fire Department.
