Ray Meyer, DePaul University basketball coaching legend and Arlington Heights native, recently turned 90, and a group of friends refuse to let that milestone pass unnoticed.

Vic Giovannini, a former high school baseball and football coach at Maine West High School, met Meyer while coaching 15 years ago. The two became fast friends, he said.

Giovannini is hosting a private party for Meyer on Thursday at his Mt. Prospect restaurant, The Loft on Kensington. Although his friend retired from coaching 20 years ago, he still has an incredible mind for sports, Giovannini said.

The Meyer coaching legacy continues in the northwest suburbs with Meyer’s grandson, John Butterfield, 33, coaching boys’ basketball at Maine West.
