One person was charged Wednesday, and police were interviewing several others after authorities said an angry crowd attacked a truck driver who fatally struck a pedestrian.

Police said 39-year-old Miguel Chavez of Cicero was driving Tuesday night on Chicago’s South Side when he struck a man near the busy intersection of 51st Street and Ashland Avenue. A group of people who saw the accident then attacked Chavez.

“He was pulled out of the truck and beaten,” police spokesman Matthew Jackson said. Chavez, who was cited by police for striking a pedestrian, remained hospitalized Wednesday in serious condition, police said.

Lavarious West, 22, of Chicago was charged with aggravated battery, Cook County state’s attorney spokeswoman Marcy Jensen said.
