It’s that time of year to remember Tuffy Rhodes, the one-time Cubs outfielder who hit three home runs on Opening Day in 1994.

But Rhodes, who has played eight seasons with the Kintetsu Buffaloes of Japan’s Pacific League, has signed a two-year deal with the Yomiuri Giants, Japan’s most popular team.

Rhodes is co-owner of Japan’s single-season home-run record of 55 set in 2001. In joining the Giants, he’s now on the same team that once had the other co-owner of that record: Sadaharu Oh. Like Babe Ruth, Oh was a former pitcher who turned into a slugger, and he finished his career with 868 homers in Japan.
