Laura Catherine Paulik’s March 20 letter to the editor, “Retail trips,” about better field trip destinations than to retail stores, reminded me of the best field trips I had as a Chicago grade-schooler in the ’50s.
They were to industrial operations.
One was the Procter and Gamble soap factory still near Phil Schmidt’s restaurant on the far Southeast Side and another was to the Radio Flyer wagon factory now located near where I grew up and still live.
All my work life has been in offices, but I still recall the excitement of walking through those noisy plants that turned raw material into familiar products.
My respect for people who work with their hands began in those trips.
