As a registered nurse, a woman and a parent, I am concerned about the Chicago Tribune’s cavalier attitude toward emergency contraception (“The morning-after pill,” Editorial, March 20).

Your “no fuss, no muss” opinion is a disservice to women. Exposing women and especially young, teenage women to high doses of hormones “in case” a pregnancy could occur does have side-effects, such as cramps, nausea, vomiting, blood clots, possible future tubal pregnancies or menstrual irregularities–and all at your local mall or high school clinic and without the advice of a doctor.

If that’s Plan B, I recommend Plan A:

More research, greater respect and safety for women and the unborn, and the benefits and rewards of abstinence.
