For a minute there, the hottest TV show not seen by the mass audience who doesn’t get HBO was “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” starring “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David. Why? Well, the show started out nicely a few years ago. Small audience. No fanfare. Offbeat, homemade look. A quirky cast who ad-libbed and looked as though they liked each other off-camera. Funny stories.
Then the show got discovered. Popularity kicked in, and David revved it up a notch. His performance got hyper.
The latest flight of shows, which had its final episode March 14, was eagerly anticipated by enthusiastic old fans and new ones too.
David went over the top, and the show lost some magic. Should we be disappointed? Sure. Should we be surprised? No.
After all, we’d been warned not to become enthusiastic about the show, hadn’t we?
All we had to do was pay heed to Larry David when he named it. He knew. Minute’s up.
More next time.
