Gordon Hawthorne’s letter to the editor (“Creating terrorists,” Voice of the people, March 20), suggesting that “kindness and tolerance” can stop terrorism, is at the very least naive. Hawthorne’s attitude will not dissuade the visceral hatred of Western society that the terrorists carry in their hearts. Their hatred is based on a sense of moral superiority that requires them to destroy us and our, in their view, corrupt way of life.
Hawthorne’s position of tolerance toward terrorists is as practical as tolerance toward a rabid animal. The rabid animal doesn’t get it.
