Detroit Red Wings goaltender Curtis Joseph is expected to be out another three days with an ankle injury but most likely will return before the end of the regular season.

An MRI exam showed a small piece of cartilage had pulled away from a bone in his right ankle, general manager Ken Holland said Saturday. Joseph hurt the ankle Tuesday during a pregame skate. He has received a cortisone shot.

The regular season ends April 3 for Detroit, and the next day for the NHL.

“It’s about what we expected,” Holland said. “There’s nothing structurally wrong. It’s a discomfort. It’s either something he’s going to be able to deal with or not deal with.

“He’s been playing with it.”

The Red Wings have had three No. 1 goalies this season: Joseph, Dominik Hasek and Manny Legace.

Leafs’ Nolan injured

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Owen Nolan had to be helped off the ice Saturday night after injuring his right leg in Toronto’s game against Ottawa.

Nolan collapsed to the ice after his leg buckled while he checked defenseman Brian Pothier into the boards near the end of the second period. He threw off his gloves and appeared to be in severe pain.
