White Sox starter Scott Schoeneweis is 0-1 after Thursday’s 3-1 loss to the New York Yankees. But if there is such a thing as a “good” loss, this would qualify. “I just got outpitched,” Schoeneweis said. “That’s the bottom line.”
Javier Vazquez dazzled the Sox, allowing just three singles to Frank Thomas, Joe Crede and Paul Konerko and two walks while striking out five over eight innings.
Manager Ozzie Guillen was very familiar with him because the two had been together in Montreal.
“Tip your hat to him–he pitched a great game,” Guillen said. “So did my guy.”
Indeed, Schoeneweis gave the Sox all they were looking for in his six innings. He also got some sparkling defense from Crede at third and Konerko at first.
“We played phenomenal defense. If we play defense like that all year, and I can battle like that all year long, we’re going to win a lot of games,” said Schoeneweis, who answered doubts about his poor spring with Thursday’s strong showing.
“We didn’t hit today,” shortstop Jose Valentin said. “(But) we had a guy on the mound who was a question mark, and he pitched a great game.”
