Rejoicing in the Hands (Young God)

Singer-guitarist-eccentric Devendra Barnhart’s music is steeped in influences that flourished before he was born 23 years ago; his nimble finger-picking recalls that of ’60s folk revivalists such as Bert Jansch, and the broad vibrato in his voice is straight out of vaudeville. He avoids anachronism by portraying timeless subjects — birth, death and the way that love makes the time between the two bearable — in highly personal terms. Both the rustic production and the writing on this album, Barnhart’s second, are miles ahead of his lo-fi debut.
