Winner: Matt Clement (5-1)
Loser: Elmer Dessens (1-4)
Star of stars:
Derrek Lee went 5-for-5 and drove in five runs. Lee’s three-run home run to left in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie.
Cut to it: Matt Clement won his fifth straight start, allowing three runs over seven innings. The Cubs’ power hitters had enough time to rediscover their form.
Interesting: Clement had perhaps the strangest of journeys scoring a run in the sixth. He reached first and advanced to second and third on three straight errors by the Arizona infield. A bases-loaded walk to Sammy Sosa sent Clement home.
RedEye review: The Cubs had better have won this game. They hadn’t been swept in any series last season or this season. But they can’t expect too many Elmer Dessens and four-error games to fall into their laps in the future.

Just saying: “It was just one of those days, it seemed like every pitch I was looking for was there for me.”
