Big stick
Mark Bellhorn, Red Sox
The former Cubs infielder went 3-for-6 with a whopping five runs driven in and four runs scored as Boston routed Oakland. One of those hits was a homer off Athletics reliever Ricardo Rincon.
Mound king
Jason Schmidt, Giants
Plenty of good pitching performances to choose from on Tuesday, but we’ll go with Schmidt, who won his fifth straight start by allowing one run over eight innings. He retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced and struck out six.
Safe or out?
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ doctor recommended season-ending surgery on slugger Richie Sexson’s injured left shoulder. Sexson, who first hurt the shoulder on a check swing against Cubs reliever LaTroy Hawkins, will get a second opinion next Tuesday or Wednesday. He would need six months to recover from the operation.
