Here are some of the Cubs’ key draft selections:
2. (66th overall) Notre Dame right-hander Grant Johnson–Lyons Township High School product was on the fast track after his freshman year, pitching for Team USA, but was sidelined all of 2003 after shoulder surgery. He returned to go 6-0 as a junior, beating UC Irvine in Saturday’s NCAA regionals, but hasn’t been as good as he was as a freshman.
3. (96th overall) Bonita (Calif.) HS C Mark Reed–The White Sox selected Oklahoma City University right-hander Matthew Hansoe nine picks before the Cubs landed Reed, who is the brother of Sox outfielder Jeremy Reed. He’s also a left-handed hitter. Wouldn’t it be great if the brothers wound up facing each other in future Cubs-Sox games?
8. (246th overall) Georgia Tech 2B Eric Patterson–Corey Patterson’s younger brother is an inconsistent hitter who, like Corey, will chase pitches and get himself out. His best tool is his speed, making him a potential leadoff hitter, but it could be tough to keep him from returning for his senior year at Tech.
