Here are some of the White Sox’s key draft selections:
1. (18th overall) Oklahoma State 3B Josh Fields–The holder of many Oklahoma State passing records, Fields started at quarterback for two years, leading the Cowboys to the Cotton Bowl last year as a junior. He’s expected to forgo his senior season to begin his pro baseball career. Solid all-around player who is expected to hit for power and be a plus third baseman.
Supplemental (38th overall) Monsignor Pace (Fla.) HS LHP Gio Gonzalez–Eighteen-year old has “electric stuff,” according to scouting reports and was an almost certain first-rounder before being dismissed from the team this spring after a dispute between his mother and the coach. He can hit 94 and has plus curve, which Baseball America rated as the second-best among the high-schoolers in the draft.
2. (59 overall) Stanford C Donny Lucy–Rated highly out of high school, he waited two years to start for the Cardinal but played well this year. He’s bright, built well for a catcher and can throw. His hitting will dictate how quickly he replaces 22-year-old Chris Stewart as the organization’s top catching prospect.
5. (149 overall) Montgomery (Texas) HS OF Brandon Allen–A linebacker who delivers nasty blows, Allen is a physical specimen. He’s as raw as they come, hit only two home runs in his senior season, but has big-time power potential. A project with a major upside.
