America, we lost a national treasure last week. In history’s first draft, Ronald Reagan is ranked as one of the greatest presidents to have served this nation.
Mr. Reagan lived several lives in one lifetime as a broadcaster, actor and president.
Mr. Reagan’s eternal optimism, wit, charm and ability to communicate with the average American transformed this nation from the gloom of the Carter years into a renaissance of economic prosperity, hope for a brighter future and reduced superpower tensions.
But there was a force in Mr. Reagan’s life for 52 years that propelled this outstanding man upward beyond the threshold of greatness. His wife, Nancy, protected, cared and loved this man for nearly two generations. She was his best buddy. Mr. Reagan was indeed very fortunate to have had Nancy beside him throughout those years of this astounding marriage.
In today’s America, replete with its marital instability and infidelity, we American males should be so lucky to have such a force to make us better men in the course of our lives.
Yes, sadly, the president is gone. But he lived a long life of 93 years. Yes, he spent the last 10 years of his life ensconced in the valley of darkness of Alzheimer’s disease. But he still had Nancy at his side through it all. Ronald Wilson Reagan, 40th president of the United States, was indeed a blessed man to have had this woman as a guiding beacon of light.
