Prairie Trailways bus line is testing the ZONAR computerized security system. It’s an electronic answer to the paperwork needed to meet a federal requirement for pre- and post-trip inspections of commercial vehicles, including passenger buses. ZONAR’s hand-held computer reads ID tags in the 10 spots that must be checked, such as wheels, tires, mirrors and lights, to make sure they are working. Then ZONAR, through a docking station in the vehicle, transmits the data to a central receiver, which e-mails it immediately to the vehicle operator so defects can be flagged and repaired. The drivers involved in the Trailways test like the system, according to Christopher Ferrone, vice president of fleet logistics and engineering.
