The spine of this record might just say Spring Heel Jack, but the front cover, where the other participating musicians are listed in nearly as big a font as the session’s leaders, tells a truer story. The English duo, who once produced Everything But the Girls’ dance club hit “Walking Wounded,” collaborate on an equal footing with a quartet of avant-jazz masters that includes trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and saxophonist Evan Parker. They meld abstract, brooding improvisations, raucous guitar heroics and unabashedly heart-tugging orchestral samples to create eight finely detailed sound sculptures.
