This is regarding “Bickering in House snags post-9/11 vow” (News, June 7). The story erroneously cites “political infighting” to describe the House’s consideration of how to ensure a functioning federal government in the event a terrorist attack kills many of our leaders. In a bipartisan manner, the House overwhelmingly defeated a constitutional amendment that would have–for the first time in history–allowed unelected members in the People’s House.
This flawed proposal was crushed because of opposition by all but four Republicans and more than two-thirds of House Democrats; that’s hardly the partisan bickering described in the story. The House has spoken with a bipartisan voice in favor of legislation expediting special elections within 45 days if more than 100 House members are killed. This legislation passed by a 306 to 97 margin with nearly all Republicans and a majority of Democrats supporting it..
