I have noticed several letters to the editor commenting on the waste of gasoline in the United States, discussing SUVs and other gas-guzzlers, driving at too high of a speed, nobody willing to carpool, etc. All of these are very true and need not be.

I have a couple more suggestions:

– Where is the need for getting up to the speed limit in the first 50 feet after the stop sign or light? Varoom! There went 30 cents worth of gas out of the tailpipe.

– When a driver sees a light turn red up ahead, he or she should ease up on the gas and coast up to the light. What’s the point in hurrying to get to a red light? By the time you get there, it might turn green.

– Cities should time stop-and-go lights so drivers spend minimal time waiting. In some cities, a driver has to stop at almost every intersection for a red light–sitting there, idling the engine, wasting both gas and time (and irritating an already impatient person).

Common sense would eliminate all three of these situations.
