St. Louis hurler Jeff Suppan had a no-hitter going through 62/3 innings Monday night, and, as you might have seen, ESPN cut in to broadcast the game live. Of course, Pittsburgh’s Craig Wilson doubled one at-bat later. Jason Bay then doubled to rob Suppan of the shutout, and the Cardinals went on to lose the game.
Pitching in
The Red Sox helped raise more than $200,000 for victims of flooding in the Dominican Republic, the homeland of stars Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz. Fans donated $31,000, Red Sox players matched that, and the team’s foundation did the same. Corporate donations bumped it over $100,000 and the team’s owner added $100,000.
8 and counting
Arizona’s Randy Johnson needs just eight strikeouts to crack 4,000 all-time. Who’s behind him on the active list? The Cubs’ Greg Maddux at 2,835.
