My family and I recently were eating at a sports bar/steakhouse in Davenport, Iowa. My adult daughter had her Special Olympics silver medal on and told the waitress all about it. Two bikers from Chicago happened to be in town and they overheard the story.

After they had left the restaurant, the waitress informed us that one of them had paid for our whole family’s meal, which came to $50. He told the waitress that he normally would donate money to Special Olympics but this year was unable to, so he was making up for that. We were shocked but very grateful.

My daughter understands that she got a free meal for being a Special Olympics winner. I will never forget the kindness of that stranger because it showed me personally how much our world has changed to accept and even sometimes embrace the mentally handicapped in the 28 years since she was born.

Yes we have come a long way. I wish to thank that man deeply for touching our hearts anonymously the way he did.
