Under the new BCS formula unveiled Thursday, the media and coaches polls will account for two-thirds of a team’s ranking with six computers making up the other third. Last year, the two human polls accounted for only one-quarter of a team’s ranking.

The strength-of-schedule, quality-wins and loss components have been removed from the formula.

REVISED: NASCAR decided to add two extra laps to races whenever necessary to help ensure green-flag finishes–a change fans had been demanding with boos and countless beer cans this year. If there is a wreck, NASCAR will clear it and restart the race under a green flag.

DOPING: The fallout from the Torri Edwards doping case could wind up giving Marion Jones a place in the 100 meters at the Athens Olympics. Edwards, the U.S. trials runner-up, could be banned for two years for use of a stimulant. If so, Gail Devers would earn the third and final spot on the U.S. team, but she has said she might not run the 100. Jones would be next in line.

LEADING: In a dramatic start to the British Open that included a hole-in-one by Ernie Els, Paul Casey of England and Thomas Levet of France each had a 5-under-par 66 to take the early lead at Royal Troon.

SIGNED: Two of the Blackhawks’ best wingers, Eric Daze and Kyle Calder, were re-signed to multiyear deals.
