In a move that sent shockwaves throughout the NFL, Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams announced that he has retired from football–after just five seasons. Williams told the Miami Herald about his decision in a cell phone interview Saturday before boarding a plane in Hawaii and heading to Asia to begin several months of travel.
“You can’t understand how free I feel,” said Williams, who may have faced a $650,000 fine for failing a marijuana test. If Williams files his retirement papers with the NFL on Monday or Tuesday as planned, the Dolphins will be left with a huge void in their backfield. And some may ask, “Why now?”
