The soundtrack to John Sayles’ last film, a story about (among other things) disillusioned Lefties, is a delightful, eclectic treasure trove. There are big guns here, including Rita Moreno and Ruben Blades and the legendary Los Panchos, but this disc also embraces a whole gang of cult figures whose work has rarely, if ever, graced a pop chart: Lila Downs, the Mexican-American singer featured in “Frida” whose repertoire includes songs in a variety of indigenous languages; Lhasa, a French-Canadian group whose sound is a combo of world influences; and Los Zafiros, a magical Cuban do-wop group from the ’60s who, because of the Cold War, had to settle for superstardom behind the Iron Curtain.
