In his July 27 letter, Brian Clifton gets it wrong regarding Lucien Lagrange’s design of the Fourth Presbyterian condo tower.
The proposal’s modern contextual design elegantly contrasts with the beautiful church.
Clifton displays the same lack of architectural sophistication that plagued the city, as well as the rest of the nation, throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Modern contextualism is about being sensitive to surroundings while still being modern and inventive.
Unfortunately many still believe a new architectural design needs to incorporate elements of nearby historical structures to fit its environment.
This could not be further from the truth, as many highly talented architects are currently demonstrating around the city.
To Clifton and others with similar outdated sentiments: Once and for all, postmodern is post-mortem.
