This is in reply to “A safer America” (Editorial, July 23). If the recently released report is the best the Sept. 11 commission can produce, it certainly needs to explain why it wasted so much time and taxpayer money. While the commission points out the flaws in the U.S. government and its intelligence community, not one single intelligence executive or federal law-enforcement executive is being held to any accountability.
For the Sept. 11 commission to lobby for a Cabinet-level intelligence czar is nothing short of political gamesmanship and has nothing to do with fixing intelligence. The commission’s recommendation of a national counterterrorism center will just add another level of bureaucracy and complexity.
The press needs to take a critical and close look at the report’s findings and recommendations. Yes, change is not just necessary but mandatory. But do we change for the better or do we change for the sake of politics?
