Good thing for this Cubs team that Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall aren’t broadcasting their games. If some players want to ban Chip Caray and Steve Stone from the team plane for being too critical, they would ask for a restraining order against Harry and Jimmy.
The legendary White Sox broadcast team went beyond caustic during their heyday. Chip has a ways to go catch his grandfather in that department.
It’s a funny thing about Chip. Fans jump on him for being too much of a homer, while the players are upset that he is too critical. The two raps don’t seem to go together.
Stone, meanwhile, never will be compared to Howard Cosell, thankfully. He is an astute analyst who is locked in on the nuances of the game. He will point out if the player makes bad play, but it always is fair and professional. He never goes over the top.
This Cubs team obviously has a thin skin. The latest flak shows they definitely are feeling the pressure of being under an unrelenting media microscope.
Caray and Stone declined to discuss the controversy Thursday. The Cubs should take the same approach.
If the players were smart, they wouldn’t worry about Caray and Stone. They have much larger problems than what is being said in the broadcast booth.
Besides, winning games has a way making the criticism disappear.
