Nomar Garciaparra has averaged 119 runs and 116 RBIs per 162 games over the last eight-plus seasons, with a .553 slugging average. These numbers are comparable to other great No. 3 hitters like Stan Musial, Rogers Hornsby and Willie Mays.

Having Nomar bat anywhere but No. 3 is a waste of his talents. Older players on the downhill have to make way for the young blood, selfishness be damned. It was Cap Anson’s team in the 19th Century. It was Ernie Banks’ team in the 20th Century. Both these greats should have statues outside the ballpark, not Harry Caray.

It was never Sammy Sosa’s team, except in his own mind.
