As the mother of a soldier who spent a year fighting in Iraq, it saddened me to read “Murder case snares the perfect soldier; Chicago GI is 1st charged in Iraq” (Page 1, July 25). To me it seems logical, if not necessary, that during a mission to capture rebel Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada Sadr, our soldiers fired upon a vehicle used by his insurgents as it attempted to flee the scene.
I believe Army Capt. Roger Maynulet acted appropriately in order to apprehend Sadr and to protect fellow soldiers, himself and those Iraqis who want peace.
This is a war and these insurgents were fighting our troops and continue to threaten the security in Iraq.
Most important, we must support our military and trust that our soldiers’ excellent training, experience and sense of duty will guide them correctly. We must never tie their hands out of fear that their actions will be misinterpreted by those who have the benefit of the security they defend every day and the hindsight privileged to those who were not there.
I thank Maynulet for his dedication of years of service to protect our country, and I trust he acted honorably.
