I’d like to respond to “Olympics status” (Voice of the people, Aug. 1). The U.S. does not sponsor its athletes. I am grateful to companies like Nike and the New York Athletic Club for making it possible for my daughter to train full time to achieve her Olympic dream.

Perhaps the letter writer has paid too much heed to the media, which seem to like nothing better than to sensationalize the very few athletes who find doping an acceptable alternative to the hard work, sacrifice and dedication that the majority of athletes make a daily routine.

Our family will be glued to the screen during the Olympics not only in support of our daughter but also to watch what is arguably the most prestigious track meet in the world. We applaud all the great athletes who have made it to the pinnacle of achievement.
