When it came to his home, Jack White had an open-door policy. “The house was always open to everybody,” said his son Andrew. He treated as family two just-released inmates who had cheered up his daughter after she was paralyzed in a diving accident, his son said. John R. “Jack” White, 71, died of complications from diabetes on Sunday, Aug. 8, in Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry. One of seven children born in Chicago, he held odd jobs to help with the family’s finances. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a quartermaster in the Korean War. In 1957, he married Barbara Woerner, and the couple moved to McHenry a year later. He worked as a dock foreman for Gumprecht Trucking of Crystal Lake for 15 years before joining School District 47 as a custodian. He retired in 1988 and took a job at Wal-Mart in Crystal Lake as a greeter. Mr. White enjoyed collecting sports cards. He and his son founded Fox Valley Collectors Club in 1981. He also was a Little League coach in Island Lake, serving as president for a time. He collected Hot Wheels cars and was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake and Alliance Bible Church in McHenry. Survivors also include a son Kevin; a sister, Elvera Davis; a brother, George; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
