Phillies slugger Pat Burrell, who was having a comeback after hitting .209 last year, will have season-ending surgery on his wrist Friday, another blow to Philadelphia’s playoff hopes.
Burrell, who injured himself in batting practice last Tuesday, was hitting .263 with 18 homers and 68 RBIs. He’ll be replaced in left field by a combination of Doug Glanville, Jason Michaels and rookie Lou Collier.
“It’s terrible,” Burrell said Monday. “The timing is awful because we are playing good at this time.”
The injury-plagued Phillies also are minus closer Billy Wagner, starter Kevin Millwood and top setup reliever Ryan Madson. Third baseman David Bell is day-to-day with back spasms and right-hander Vicente Padilla is due to return from the disabled list on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day general manager Ed Wade bolstered Philadelphia’s rotation, acquiring right-hander Cory Lidle, 7-10 with a 5.32 ERA in 24 starts, from Cincinnati for two minor leaguers and a player to be named.

An MRI exam Monday revealed that Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny has a strained right biceps and he is expected to miss only one start after being forced to leave a weekend game because of pain in his arm. . . . Braves left-hander Horacio Ramirez starts preparing for his return this week after about 2 1/2 months on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis with a rehab assignment Wednesday at Double-A Greenville.
