Robert E. McCann, 79, a resident of St. Simons Island, died Friday, August 6, 2004 in the V.A. Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Mr. McCann was a native of Chicago, IL, and had been a resident of St. Simons since 1978. Mr. McCann developed the Criminal Justice Program at St. Xavier University and taught there part-time as a Associate Professor of Criminal Justice from 1973-1978. As Director of Police Training for the Chicago Police Department, he was the first person in the country to bring college courses into police training. This was done through the City Colleges of Chicago. He also assisted in developing the Public Administration Masters Program at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Retired after 31 years in the Chicago Police Department, he moved south and was with the U.S. Treasury Department teaching at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia for 11 years. He was a member of the United States Navy League and was active in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of the St. Williams Catholic Church on St. Simons and was a usher at the Church. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy and flew Navy Torpedo Bombers and was a Carrier Pilot. Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2004, at the St. Williams Catholic Church on St. Simons Island with Military rites at theChurch. Rev. John Kenneally and Rev. Ted Johnson, officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday night and the family request in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Williams Catholic Church Organ Fund, or the Robert E. McCann Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Xavier University, c/o St. Irenaeus Chekouras, 9807 S. Karlov, Oak Lawn, IL 60453. Survivors are his wife, Ann Creely McCann of St. Simons Island; daughter, Margaret McCann of Jacksonville, FL, two sons, Robert E. McCann, Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Terrance McCann of Morton, IL; and four grandchildren. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, in charge of arrangements.
