He qualified for the 1976 Olympic team but was banned from amateur competition in 1975 by archery’s governing body for participating in a non-sanctioned event in Vermont. When eligibility rules changed in 1991, he got his amateur status.

Early days

When he was 15, his brother-in-law took him to an archery store and range, and he was hooked.

He designed his house around a shooting range with a 100-foot indoor range in the garage and an outdoor range.

Post-Olympic star potential

Not so good. Johnson is a key member of the U.S. team competition, having won gold in 1996. But it’s only archery. Star power: 2 out of 10.
