Phil Rogers stated in his Aug. 10 column that the Padres “have not had a poster child since Tony Gwynn retired, nor will they have a single hitter ranked in the top 10 in the NL in any of the major offensive categories (average, home runs, RBIs).

Wrong, oh baseball sage. Mark Loretta of the Padres was batting .334, which was fourth in the league at the time, and leading the NL with 147 hits.

Nice piece, but even a baseball guru overlooks certain teams, players and All-Stars.
