Donald Rumsfeld’s piece demonstrates the confusion guiding current American policy. Iraq is not Korea. Nor is it Germany or Japan. As President Bush’s father was well aware, overthrowing the government of Iraq meant plunging ourselves into a maelstrom of competing factions beyond our control. It meant fueling anti-American sentiment of long standing. It meant giving incitement to further terrorism.

Because our invasion came at a time when Iraq had not attacked us or any other state, Muslims and others inevitably view us as the aggressors.

The notion that we can bring freedom to Iraq as we did to other countries is nothing but irresponsible confusion. And confusion is hardly a basis for strength.
