Philadelphia Phillies slugger Jim Thome is day to day with an injured right shoulder.

Thome was out of Philadelphia’s lineup Saturday after hurting himself the night before in a loss to San Francisco. He was hurt when he was hit by a grounder but stayed in the game for a few more innings.

X-rays were negative, but the All-Star first baseman has a bruised joint in his right shoulder.

“I couldn’t even raise my arm this morning,” Thome said.

The Phillies, who came in seven games behind NL East-leading Atlanta, have been decimated by injuries this season. Left fielder Pat Burrell could face season-ending wrist surgery, and third baseman David Bell has missed a week with back spasms.

Also, starter Kevin Millwood has a sore elbow and closer Billy Wagner has a tender shoulder. Both are out indefinitely. And top reliever Ryan Madson (finger) remains sidelined.

Reds place Wilson on 15-day DL

The Cincinnati Reds placed Paul Wilson on the 15-day disabled list with lower back soreness.

Right-hander Joe Valentine was recalled from Triple-A Louisville, where he was 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA.

Wilson (9-4) leads the Reds in wins but has allowed 14 runs over his last two starts, both losses.

The Reds will recall Luke Hudson from Double-A Chattanooga to start Sunday’s game against San Diego.

Pirates release Simon

Pittsburgh released first baseman Randall Simon and activated first baseman Daryle Ward from the 15-day DL. Simon was batting just .194.
