Sometimes, dare we say it, you just don’t feel like having a drink. Sure, you wanna hang out with your buds, but your liver’s about to jump ship and the whole perma-hangover thing’s getting a bit old. And sipping on a Coke while everyone else is pounding pints is so … boring. So whether you’re the designated driver for the night or you just decided to get on the wagon, these boozeless concoctions are more creative than the usual soda.
Peach Fizz, $3.75
The bellinis at Bistro 110 are legendary. But being on the wagon doesn’t mean you have to miss out on these luscious treats–just skip the bubbly! This yummy mix of peach puree, orange juice, Sprite and crushed ice is served in a brandy snifter with an orange slice and a cherry on top. The wonderfully sweet taste will make you forget it’s non-alky. 110 E. Pearson St. 312-266-3110.
Heather’s Pregnant Punch, $3
Named after the owner’s pregnant wife, Ta’Too’s punch is an alcohol-free version of a Lunchbox (which usually consists of beer, orange juice and either SoCo or amaretto–we’re getting a hangover just thinking about it!). This semi-healthy rendition cuts out the extras and is made with just O’Doul’s and OJ. If mixing beer with juice is your thing, who are we to judge? 1365 W. Fullerton Ave. 773-525-2739.
Hibiscus Twist, $4
Sure, your liver may be getting a break, but what about your immune system? NoMi’s hooch-free mix will give you a vitamin C blast that’s much needed after a night in a smoky bar. Specially brewed Argo hibiscus tea is mixed with lemonade and water to make a refreshingly light spritzer–minus the vino. 800 N. Michigan Ave. 312-239-4030.
Easy Living, $2
Bartenders have long dished up these fruity concoctions, but who knew it had a name? Rockit’s version is a blend of orange, cranberry and pineapple juices. To everyone else, it’ll look like some tequila nightmare, and the name definitely won’t give you away. 22 W. Hubbard St. 312-645-6000.
Empty Belly, $2
Pick a puree, any puree. Well actually, choose from mango, banana or strawberry, and then mix it with orange and cranberry juices. If this sounds familiar, that’s because Belly’s has been serving these drinks all summer–spiked with Malibu rum, of course. But the teetotaler’s version is just as yummy and doesn’t dish out a rum hangover in the morning. 3210 N. Lincoln Ave. 773-525-3632.
Bitburger Drive, $3.50
Order an O’Doul’s and you may as well just drink water. Instead, why not try this more obscure brew at Matchbox. It looks like the real deal with its light golden hue, and the taste is full of hops and just a touch sweet. Plus, it’s not overly sugary like many near beers. 770 N. Milwaukee Ave. 312-666-9292.
