Alex Rodriguez decided to drop his appeal and start serving a four-game suspension for fighting Saturday–right after he was told he had a three-day flu. The flu knocked him out of the lineup before Friday’s series opener with Seattle, and he stayed in bed all day Saturday.

Injury bug

Mets shortstop Kaz Matsui was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday because of back spasms, joining Mike Piazza and Jose Reyes as the third key member of New York’s lineup to succumb to an injury in a week. To top it off, pitching ace Tom Glavine lost two teeth after his taxi crashed Tuesday.
