David D. “Doc” Saviola, 85, of Knox, IN, formerly of Elmhurst. Beloved husband of Nancy, nee Rizzo; loving father of John (Nicole), Nancy Saviola Kies, Michael (Debra), Daniel (Deborah) and the late David; proud grandfather of 18; great-grandfather of many; brother of Jean Ciavarella, Joe (Lois) Saviola, Jim (Lizan) Saviola and the late Paula Reno; brother-in-law of Florence Marasco, Annette Pifer, Angelo Rizzo, Francine Leo and Estelle VonBrimer; uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was a mentor to children, hero to his country and friend to so many. A man of the “Greatest Generation Ever”, was born in 1918, on the cusp of WWI, survived the Great Depression, and served in WWII. He was a Tech Sergeant who served in the Philippine Islands, and was part of the US Occupation Forces in Japan. He grew up in Melrose Park, IL, where he married his childhood sweetheart in 1939. Together they enjoyed spending time with their many children and grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He retired from the Railroad after 22 years. Visitation at the Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst, from 3 to 9 p.m., Tuesday.
