A United Airlines cargo building at O’Hare International Airport was evacuated Wednesday after a small amount of a nickel compound was found, forcing 25 workers to leave.

Hazardous materials crews were sent to the building at about 5:20 p.m. when five to 10 pounds of the substance in pellet form was discovered, said Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman Rosa Escareno.

The crews identified the substance as nickel oxide and determined it came from a package in the mail-cargo area.

It was cleaned up within an hour.

Nickel oxide can be harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin, but no one was injured, Escareno said.
