Leave it to the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association to capitalize on the Athens Olympics.

Leading up to the USLMRA 13th annual STA-BIL Keeps Gas Fresh Finals and Challenge of Champions on Sept. 4 in Mansfield, Ohio, the group’s president made an Olympic announcement.

“Just like our Olympic athletes, lawn mower racers epitomize the core values of athletic competition: love of sport, pursuit of excellence and the desire for a weed-free yard,” said Bruce Kaufman, president of the 500-member USLMRA.

The September race is the last of the 18-race STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series.

New to the sport? Here’s a quick crash course: The nation’s fastest lawn mower races at speeds up to 60 m.p.h. in deck-to-deck bladeless competition.

The racers have some great stories, not to mention more than enough opportunities to make lawn mowing puns with their team names.

The Ohio race is expected to feature the Turfinator, Sodzilla, Mr. Mowjangles, Weedy Gonzales, Prograsstinator and Geronimow.

Races are on ESPN2. Need more info? Fertilize your mind at www.letsmow.com.
