The terrible car crash that killed Chicago Police Officer Michael Gordon and injured his partner is exactly the kind of nightmare scenario imagined by any sober driver approaching a quiet intersection on an early morning in Chicago–is some drunken sociopath behind the wheel about to run his red light (Metro, Aug. 14)?
There are people who drink and drive in this city week in and week out, knowing that a police force occupied with street crime isn’t likely to make the random stop that catches them. Maybe if the kind of “accident” that struck down Officer Gordon was included in the homicide statistics where it belongs, more public pressure would be put on the system that we trust to maintain order in society, and maybe some money might be spent fighting this problem. A drunk driver is the terrorist we are all more likely to face in our lifetime.
