Almost a year and a half after rejecting a condominium proposal because of density issues, the Plan Commission repeated similar concerns with town homes.

The newest plans presented at a public hearing Wednesday showed 16 connected town homes in one three-story building on about a half-acre at 720 N. Washington St. The commission had rejected a plan to build a four-story condominium building on the property.

The public hearing was continued until September to allow the developer to make changes to the proposal.

Residents, business owners and commissioners reiterated concerns about the new proposal, including density, inadequate guest parking and too much traffic for an alleyway.

In other business, Plan Commissioner Joe McElroy suggested that landmark status be given to historic properties such as an early 1920s Sears kit barn and other structures from Hatchwood Farm that residents are trying to save.

He cited Kane County as an example of a place where the landmark status of farms and barns is constantly being reviewed. He said Naperville is more interested in free enterprise.

“There aren’t many of them left and it’s a shame so many haven’t been preserved,” he said.

The city is being asked to annex the farm at 24W020 77th St. from Lisle Township for development of six single-family homes. The Plan Commission continued the public hearing until Sept. 1.
