This is regarding “Storm’s victims say future looks grim; Even as relief efforts begin, residents worry about rebuilding, employment” (Page 1, Aug. 17). Tribune national correspondent Dahleen Glanton’s report on hurricane recovery efforts confirmed that the best instincts of Americans are to help each other and resolve to rebuild.
It’s disappointing, then, that the headline writer couldn’t resist the temptation to put a negative spin on the situation. It’s always a struggle to regain normalcy in the wake of disaster, and our hearts go out to the survivors. But there is good news, and hope, that needs to be acknowledged. Our country mobilizes extremely well to rush to the aid of victims. The resolve of people to rebuild their businesses and homes and resume their lives is undeniable. It has never been our national character to succumb to negativity and despair, even after the worst attacks and catastrophes, both natural and manmade. It was unfair of your headline writer to presume that the people of Florida are any different.
