There’s no doubt that Dusty Baker is a great manager, but that facade is starting to lose a little of its luster. He is simply wearing out his bullpen, using four and five relievers every game. Whatever happened to allowing starting pitchers to complete their games? Pitch counts dominate all rational thinking. Years ago no one even counted pitches. Complete games were the rule rather than the exception. “Closer” wasn’t even in the baseball jargon. The Cubs have the best pitching staff in the majors, and look at the results game after game. A manager who can’t win with this talented team should start looking for answers.
