American Joanna Hayes caught a break Tuesday. Or maybe world champion Perdita Felicien caught an unlucky one.
Either way, Hayes left Olympic Stadium with a gold medal after winning the 100-meter hurdles. Felicien was knocked from the race when she clipped the first hurdle and fell, taking Russia’s Irina Shevchenko with her. Hayes set a new Olympic record at 12.37 seconds.
BEACHIN’: The U.S. finally has a medal in women’s beach volleyball. In fact, it’s a gold medal. Misty May and Kerri Walsh cruised to a 21-17, 21-11 victory over Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar of Brazil. Americans Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs won the bronze match.
RULON MOVES ON: Super heavyweight Rulon Gardner easily moved to the semifinals by winning three matches. First, he took Mindaugas Mizgaitis of Lithuania, followed by Sergei Moreyko of Bulgaria and, finally, Marek Mikulski of Poland. If Gardner beats Georgi Tsurtsumia of Kazakhstan on Wednesday, he will advance to the gold medal match.
OUT: The Cinderella story of the Games is over. After an inspirational march to the quarterfinals, the Iraq men’s soccer team lost to Paraguay, 3-1, and must now play in the bronze medal game.
