The Tribune and William Rood are to be commended. Rather than join the rising tide of propaganda bent on smearing Sen. John Kerry, the Tribune and Rood did what good journalism should do–seek out the truth and make it known.

Sadly, while I watched various network and cable news channels Sunday evening, I saw nothing of Rood’s revelations. I did see, however, video of Robert Dole’s scathing attack on Kerry.

The difference between Dole and Rood as witnesses is obvious. While we may not know exactly where Dole was on Feb. 28, 1969, we do know that it was nowhere near Vietnam; Rood, on the other hand, was on the river with Kerry, in the next boat. The same difference exists between Kerry’s “Band of Brothers” and those swift boat veterans who have now surfaced to vilify him.

We can only hope that Rood’s story gets the circulation it deserves. If it does, voters will easily discern the difference between hatchet-men like Dole and a veteran like Rood, who only broke his 35-year silence on the subject to set an important record straight.
