Thirty-five years ago the Vietnam War divided our country horribly.

Today acrimony is flying fast and furious between veterans of that war–as if history can be rewritten.

Recollections–like those of William Rood of the Chicago Tribune–are deeply disturbing for veterans.

Eventually today’s hullabaloo should come into focus: We’re in Iraq, like we were in Vietnam, and we can’t get out.

American men and women are dying there.

Our economy is in shambles; our children’s future is mortgaged. Our administration is backpedaling, shifting blame and redefining its mission.

Similarities are overwhelming.

No wonder that three-decade-old events should now appear like yesterday for our Vietnam veterans.
